Free trade agreements have always existed, even starting with the Greek antiquity. They involve changing import taxes on certain goods and sometimes even removing all taxes and quotas. But they do not automatically involve other facilities than commercial ones. Thus, a free trade agreement does not mean that the visa requirements would be also automatically abolished.

Free trade zones are special areas inside customs territory of a state or EU Community. Goods placed within these areas are free of import duties, VAT and other import charges.The free zones were created with the aim of promoting international exchanges and attract foreign investment in high technologies, know-how, increasing the use of the local economy resources.
Curtici – Arad Free Trade Zone
The Curtici Arad Free Trade Zone is the only free zone located in Western Romania and is made up of two platforms that cover an area of 90 ha. The first platform is located near the city of Curtici, between the railway line leading to Hungary and the county road 792C Curtici – Dorobanti. The second platform is located in the Western part of Arad – adjacent to the runway Arad International Airport.The Free Trade Zone operates both international companies in the automotive, textile, plastics, transport and logistics areas, as well as Romanian trading companies whose purpose is the duty-free trade of goods.
Braila Free Zone Administration
The last seaport of the Danube, Braila ensures the connection with the Black Sea and the maritime routes of the world.
With a total surface of 113 ha, Braila free zone is divided in 4 perimeters, offering easy access to the national road, railway or the Danube river.
The suitable industries for the area are: food industry, wood, textile, building materials, finishing and assembly of metallic confections, storage of fuels and petroleum products, automotive, commerce, banks, logistics etc.
Galati Free Trade Zone
Galati Free Trade Zone is located on the left side of the Danube at mile 80, in the Eastern part of the city, offering a quick access to land and naval communication ways. This Free Zone is a viable solution for trade and industrial development. It’s location on the Danube shore, close to the Black Sea and its connection to the North Sea by Rhine – Main – Danube Canal make it an important transit point between Orient and Europe, bringing real benefits to investors as well as a commercial point that can supply millions of customers.
Giurgiu Free Zone
In addition to its accustomed function of gravity centre for international trade flows, Giurgiu Free Zone aims at attracting foreign investors that want to develop industrial activities and stimulating exports of processed products. Giurgiu Free Zone covers an area of 160 ha. Since its establishment, this trade zone had an industrial profile, as production units have been operating here since its inception. Following this, Giurgiu Free Zone aimes at concentrating the investment capital towards this type of activity, considering that there are already available production facilities that require minimal improvements and, on the other hand, Giurgiu city has a skilled labor force, trained in a large variety of professions suitable for productive activities.
Sulina Free Zone Administration
Located on the middle arm of the Danube river, just before its spilling into the Black Sea, Sulina Free Zone Administration is suitable for manufacturing and services. Companies establishing here can lease land or constructions for a period up to 49 years as well as renting them for a period of minimum one month and maximum 5 years.
